Elena Mann, MD is an OB/GYN with the SLMA Comprehensive Health Clinic. She supports her patients on an individual level with compassion and empathy during this sacred time in their lives.
“When I was contemplating my career choice, I wanted to help people on an individual basis and also to help the community as a whole. A career in medicine was the best way in which I could help to educate, inspire, motivate, and change lives.
What is your favorite part of practicing medicine?
My favorite part of practicing medicine is experiencing the joy of childbirth with families. It is an honor to be a part of such an amazing experience. The journey leading up to and ushering in a new life into the world is a sacred and intimate bonding experiencing.
What is your least favorite part of what you do?
My least favorite part of practicing medicine is to have to deliver bad news. For example, revealing a diagnosis of a fetal death or a cancer diagnosis is such an emotionally heart-wrenching experience for the patient, their families, and myself.
What do your clients say about you?
I would like to believe that my ideal clients would say that I am compassionate and empathetic. They would say that I listen and treat them as I would my own family and how I would want to be treated in the same situation.
What interests you most about working at the SLMA Comprehensive Health Clinic?
I am excited to work at the SLMA Comprehensive Health Clinic as it is an organization that puts the overall well being of all patients and their providers at its core. SLMA has done an absolutely amazing job of delivering the highest quality health care and education since its existence. Its commitment to excellence is unparalleled.
What are your responsibilities within the clinic?
My clinical responsibilities will include providing quality health care to adolescents and women throughout various stages of their lives. I will provide care that will encompass the preteen/teen years, reproductive years, contraceptive choices, and menopausal concerns.
Who inspires you?
I am inspired by my mother and all of the hard-working women that I encounter. While not everyone may have a “traditional 9-5 job,” it is absolutely amazing how hard many women work in the home and in the community. Not everyone is or can be a mother, but the impact that each woman can have on other women and young children (both boys and girls) is astounding. Every person has a story, and every person has a purpose. What is amazing is how people find their purpose and live it out. Each and every one of us has the ability to inspire others.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
My motto or mantra is “Be your best self. “ For me, that means to never stop learning, to never stop growing/changing, and to never stop giving. There is no greater gift that the gift of helping others. But, to help others, I have to continue to constantly try to improve myself and to be the best person that I can be.
What are you most passionate about professionally?
Professionally, I am most passionate about the unborn, developing child as that is a person who does not yet have a voice to advocate for him- or herself. One of the most important things that I can do is to help advise mothers on healthy choices that will be most beneficial for themselves and their babies.
What most excites you about your work and the contribution you can make?
The biggest contribution that I can make professionally is ensuring that I provide education for patients. When a patient is properly educated about her condition and the best ways to maintain or improve it, that resonates with her. Frequently, many parts of that education will then be passed on to her family and friends. Changing one life can ultimately change many, many more. What excites me most is the impact that one small healthy change can make to so many.
What are you passionate about personally?
Personally, I am most passionate about my family as they are the people that I will always have during all of the brightest and darkest moments in my life. They have brought me immeasurable joy and pride. For me, my family is worth any sacrifice.
What is your favorite pastime outside of work?
My favorite pastime outside of work is learning about different cultures through traveling and reading. There are many ways in which we all are the same and many ways in which we are all different. I enjoy exploring those aspects.
Anything else you’d like to tell people about yourself?
I would like for everyone to know that I am a physician that will walk with them along their personal health journey. I will be there for my patients during both the good and bad times. To be a women’s health physician is both humbling yet immensely rewarding. I will work tirelessly to ensure that I am worthy of my patients’ trust.
