South Louisiana Medical Associates is home to a team of driven physicians who combine unrivaled patient services with a passion for community involvement to deliver comprehensive, quality care that embodies the core values of our mission as a healthcare provider.

To help you get to know some of SLMA’s dedicated staff on a more personal level, we have launched a “Meet the Doctors” series. Stephanie Durocher, NP, is a nurse practitioner. Durocher is based at our SLMA Comprehensive Health Clinic location in Houma.

durocherstephanieWhy did you choose to go into the Medical Field?

My mother, grandmother and great grandmother were all nurses. I’ve dreamed of being a provider since early childhood, and I’ve always had a passion for caring for the sick and a desire to heal.

What is your favorite part of practicing medicine?

I love my patients. I feel that it is privilege to walk with them through some of the most significant times of their lives.

What is your least favorite part?

Access to outside services are challenging with populations who have limited resources. There are many gaps, with many patients having to do without the best services and care at times. I believe SLMA is working to do the very best for our patients and provide the care they need.

What do your clients say about you?

They say that I am compassionate, and they know how much I care.

What interests you most about working at the SLMA CHC?

I am excited about the culture at SLMA. It’s obvious to me that this group is truly concerned with quality patient care. The staff members are passionate and eager to make a difference. It’s something I am excited to become part of.

What are your responsibilities within the clinic?

I will see patients in the clinic as a nurse practitioner. I also assist with in-patient admissions. My responsibilities include managing our clients who are acutely ill while they are in the hospital, as well as assisting with the transition of their care following hospital discharge.

Who inspires you?

My mother and grandmother both inspire me. They were both passionate, dedicated and hard-working nurses.

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

It’s about progress, not perfection.

What are you most passionate about professionally? What most excites you about your work and the contributions you make?

In general, I LOVE people! Specifically, I am most passionate about working with the geriatric population. I have always felt a burning desire to be in their space and contribute in some way. When I was a little girl, I used to visit the halls of the nursing home where my grandmother worked and visit with the different residents. I would talk to them for hours. I feel a deep connection with them and a compassion for them. They face many losses and are in a season of life of which we all will enter one day. I am excited to have the opportunity to make a difference in this population. It is wonderful to know that we are helping to improve the quality of life for all of our patients, old and young.

What are you passionate about personally?

I am passionate about my family

What is your favorite pastime outside of work?

I love spending time with my kids. We love to play games and travel. Additionally, I love to read and love music.

Any volunteer activities or nonprofits you are active in?

I volunteer at a local pregnancy crisis center.
