South Louisiana Medical Associates is home to a team of driven physicians who combine unrivaled patient services with a passion for community involvement to deliver comprehensive, quality care that embodies the core values of our mission as a healthcare provider.
To help you get to know some of SLMA’s dedicated staff on a more personal level, we are kicking off a “Meet the Doctors” series. Dr. Shyam Mani is a board-certified, problem-solving, people-focused physician on Terrebonne General hospital medicine team.
Why did you choose to go into the medical field?
Medicine for me was not something that I always dreamed of doing. I initially was uncertain of what my future professional plans were, and it was only after shadowing a family friend who was a gastroenterologist, that I was exposed to medicine and the problem-solving, person-focused field. Once I started seeing patients and studying the material, the decision was an easy one.
What is your favorite part of practicing medicine?
I have always enjoyed working with people. My favorite part of practicing medicine is without a doubt working with patients, as well as their families, to guide them toward their medical goals.
What is the least favorite part of what you do?
I’m sure many would think it is delivering bad news to patients and their family members; however, as a physician, this is one of the most important parts of our services. Being empathetic, supportive and understanding is what is most important; to try and help patients and their families through a tragic situation. The area I dislike most is really the paperwork and hours, which can sometimes leave you drained and fatigued – a small price to pay.
What do your patients say about you?
I would like to say that they feel I am genuine and a good educator, who ensures they understand what is wrong with them and how together we plan on tackling the problem.
What are your responsibilities within the clinic?
I am part of the hospital medicine team.
Who/what inspires you?
As cliché as it may be, I have always been driven by my parents and family who have always been supportive, no matter what my decisions were.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
I always think about the quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
What are you most passionate about professionally?
I am committed to educating my patients and creating an improved understanding and awareness of medical problems in our population.
What most excites you about your work and the contribution you can make?
I hope to make the most of my opportunity to further enhance the good that SLMA has brought to the area over the years.
What is your favorite pastime outside of work?
I enjoy coming home to my dogs and going for a walk. They usually brighten even the darkest of days. I also enjoy reading, golf and scuba diving, which has sadly taken a back seat for quite some time, and I look forward to getting back into these.
Anything else you’d like to tell people about yourself?
I look forward to working with SLMA to care for the people in Houma and the surrounding area.
