Alexis Duke is a dermatologist with the SLMA Dermatology Clinic. Her approachable manner and passion for treating patients like family makes her an asset to the SLMA family.

Why did you choose to go into the medical field?

I grew up in a hospital environment so I have always been very comfortable around the medical field. I began volunteering at the hospital as a teenager, and found joy with interacting with new people on a daily basis. I really wanted to help people in a time of need, and I feel like the medical field chose me. I honestly never considered another career for myself.

What is your favorite part of practicing medicine?

My absolute favorite parts of practicing medicine are not only the challenge that difficult cases may bring, but also the satisfaction of helping someone in need.

What is your least favorite part of what you do?

I dislike having to deliver bad news to a patient.

What do your clients say about you?

My patients say that I am very approachable. What I often hear is that they feel very comfortable discussing their problems with me, and that I try to involve them as much as possible in their treatment plans.

What interests you most about working at the SLMA Comprehensive Health Clinic?

I enjoy working for a multi-specialty group practice because it allows me immediate access to various other subspecialties and allows me to focus on the care of my patients, without the hassles of running an office. I can shift my full focus toward my patients.

What are your responsibilities within the clinic?

My responsibilities as a medical dermatologist are to evaluate, diagnose and treat diseases of the skin as well as the skin manifestations of systemic diseases.

Who inspires you?

I always love it when people can see the good in any situation. Positive attitudes and hope are inspirational for me.

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

I have a strong belief that every patient should be treated as you would a member of your own family.

What are you most passionate about professionally?

I would definitely have to say I am passionate about education and prevention. As a dermatologist, I have seen the destruction that skin cancer has brought to the lives of many of my patients. I work in a field where fairly simple preventative measures may decrease the risk of a life-altering cancer. It is my job to make sure that every patient I see has a basic understanding of their disease process, and any measures they should take for prevention.

What most excites you about your work and the contribution you can make?

I really enjoy challenging medical dermatology cases and assimilating information to find diagnoses and formulate treatment plans for my patients. I am fortunate enough to work in a field where every day I see different cases, and I continue to learn from my patients daily.

What are you passionate about personally?

I am passionate about spending quality time with my children. I try not to miss the little moments, whether it is going for a walk together in our neighborhood, driving to piano practice, or throwing a ball in the backyard. Time is too fleeting to lose sight of what is important in our lives.

What is your favorite pastime outside of work?

I enjoy spending all of my free time with my husband and three children. We have three young boys, so there is never a dull moment in my house!
